way. If you have ever gotten in line at the check-
out counter at your favorite grocery and found yourself behind a lady who was
shuffling through a bucket full of assorted coupons, then you probably have asked
yourself…as I have…”who in the world has time to clip, sort, save, retrieve, and
redeem dozens, and maybe hundreds, of coupons each and every month”. For
years, I pondered that question. If you ask the average person, “Do you clip
coupons?”…most folks will answer, “No”. Also, I have found that most of the “clippers”
seem to be of the female gender. I suppose a sexist remark here could be, “Women
have more time to do the clipping and sorting”. I don’t think I want to go there.
Besides, I really do not think that is true…or the reason for the difference. It may
be the fact that some ladies, in order to be able to fill their kitchen with the necessary
items to run a household and feed the inhabitants, especially in today’s economy,
must be prudent and make use of the offers that appear in her mailbox. I suppose
one can’t really fault them for that. After all, grocery stores and the manufacturers
that stock their shelves have created a real science out of this coupon thing. If an
item is over-stocked in the warehouse…move it with coupons. If a company wants
to introduce a new product…offer a special discount on the first purchase. Again,
there is nothing wrong with that type of marketing…or shopping.
The real problem in “coupon clipping”, as I see it, is the lack of good judgment in
the making of offers for certain types of goods and services. The jury is still out on
this “cash for clunkers” auto trading phenomenon. The banks, the auto dealers and
manufacturers, the customers, and even the politicians who dreamed up this whole
thing are not really sure if it makes sense. Time will tell. It’s going to be interesting
to see how the next few months unfold…as the new models reach the showrooms.
Another industry that is stuffing a lot of coupons into your mailbox by way of
newspapers, flyers, and “special offer packets”, is the restaurant trade. If you took
advantage of all the offers that appear in these publications, you would die of some
medical malady within a year. Coupons for “buy one, get one free” burgers, milk
shakes, etc. seem to be in every window and on every billboard. The latest deal is
the buy an adult meal and your kid eats free. This is really a handy offer. In most
cases, where the owner of a restaurant wants to promote his new establishment…or
maybe his new menu…this type of deal works for everyone. However, one must
exercise caution in advertising this offer. One such owner stated in his ad, “Kids eat
free”. You can imagine the scene when one of his regular customers came in with
a half dozen hungry youngsters who were expecting to eat free. Careful wording in
the ad is of great importance here.
Frankly, I am at a loss as to how to address this final campaign that is being
promoted currently on television. One restaurant is offering the “Kids eat free”
option every day from late afternoon until late night…through the entire second
shift. I do understand that the casual dining business is experiencing a considerable
decrease in traffic these days, but it is a mystery to me how a restaurant can make
money when it sells one meal for five to ten dollars…and then gives away for free
another five dollar meal on the same ticket. When I worked at Roy’s Sandwich
Shop … back when…Roy was “netting” ten to twenty percent on his menu items. I
fail to understand how a major chain can profit with a “Kids eat free” offer as I just
described. Maybe they feel that they will fair better if they merely look busy. Don’t
get me wrong. I’m glad folks are getting a break… especially those with kids.
However, instead of this kind of strategy, wouldn’t it be better to just serve really
good food at a really good price? As a matter of fact, if you check out our advertisers
in this brand-new first edition of the Southeast Observer , I think you will find
that they are beginning to follow that kind of philosophy. Great food at a great price
is better than giving away food in order to have patrons occupy a chair in their
dining room. Try them and I believe you will agree with me. By the way, tell them
you saw them in the OBSERVER!!!
