LEONARD’S WORLD OF WHEELS
by Paul Puckett
What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than to browse through a few dozen beautiful old
classic cars and listen to their owners tell their varied stories of how they were acquired and what
had to be done to get them into show condition. Just such a show was held at the Masonic Lodge in
Shannon last weekend. If you attended, you probably ran into several friends of mine who were
displaying their toys in grand style. Some of my personal favorites were a couple of 1963 Ford
Galaxies and a vintage 1965 Mustang. I suppose, like everyone else, I am usually drawn to cars I
remember from my early days of driving.
At least one owner, however, usually provides entries from the thirties and forties. The gentleman to
which I am referring is Leonard Pilgrim. I have to admit, the beauty of his old machines is unsurpassed.
He not only chooses cars with timeless design, but he then restores them to perfection. Each one
looks like it just came out of a Clark Gable or Jimmy Stewart movie. Actually, Leonard prefers them
because they were popular when he was a young man. As a matter of fact, he will tell you just how
many similar cars he owned and how much he paid for them.

Artistry in Wood
Drive up 27 through Armuchee, and you may see Johnathan Knight in front of his shop sawing away on a big log with his
chainsaw. Stop in and take a look at the unique pieces of wood carving. Uncle John’s Woodcarving shop in Armuchee offers one-
of-a-kind woodcarving. Owner Johnathan Knight found his calling a few years ago when he began watching Levon Brady carve
wood. Johnathan said he spent six years working with Mr. Brady, listening for five of those years, and carving for one! He knew
immediately that he had found his passion, and has been carving ever since. Before becoming a wood carver, Mr. Knight enjoyed
painting and drawing, and has always enjoyed the visual arts. But it wasn’t until he learned woodcarving that he realized he’d
found his calling.
Mr. Knight works with all types of tools, from chainsaws to knives, routers, and dremel bits. He uses the chain saw to remove
a lot of wood quickly, so he can get down to the “nitty gritty.” He works mainly in cedar and white pine because these woods are
soft and forgiving, he says. His subject matter is usually flowers, animals and Indians, but he takes custom orders of any subject
matter.
He finds wood carving relaxing, and uses it as therapy. He says he just gets lost in the wood, and finds that hours pass quickly.
So it is just icing on the cake that people like to buy his work, and he is flattered when someone puts in an order for a custom
mantel for their fireplace, or a wooden Indian to display on their porch.
Uncle John’s Wood Carving is located in Armuchee at 3956 Martha Berry Highway. The phone number is 706.767.9911.

Leonard has been collecting these old classics for the past 10 years and, at 75
years of age, he is the oldest member of the car shows in Rome. He presently
owns six show cars and is currently in the process of restoring six more. He
recently sold several classic trucks and is constantly buying, selling, and trading
vintage cars and trucks. Some of the oldest models are 1930 and 1931 “Model
A” coupes.
Though Leonard worked as a general contractor in Atlanta for twenty years, he
was also employed in retail management for 25 years. He served as Post
Commander of the American Legion (post 52) in Rome in 2005 and 2006. He
says his favorite cars are his 1940 Ford, which has won 20 awards, and his 1938
Plymouth, winner of 36 awards. Keep in mind, Gone with the Wind and The
Wizard of Oz were both released in 1939.
Last year, Leonard’s 1940 Ford won 3 rd place in the Air and Car Show at Russell
Field, and last Saturday it took 3 rd place in the Shannon show.
A genuine curiosity is the fact that the price for a 1930’s Duesenberg in 1970
might reach two or three million…or more. However, because the buying
generation no longer relates to that era, those cars now rarely go for more than
several hundred thousand. On the other hand, it is not uncommon for a 1960’s
muscle car in top condition to sell for $1,000,000 or more.

Bridges Discount Home Store opened its doors Friday, September 28, bringing a
wide variety of household items at very discounted prices to Calhoun. There will
be a Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, October 27. This coincides with
the Fall Festival. Come on out to Bridges Discount Home Store and enjoy live
music, food, and fun in the parking lot! There will be drawings for door prizes as
well.
Owners Don and Gray Bridges are excited to offer overstock, store model and
discontinued items: everything from small kitchen appliances, cookwear, and
bedding to lamps, tools, books, dvds, collectibles and camping gear. New items
will be arriving frequently, so there will always be new items to choose from.
Don and Gray came up with the idea of a discount store after he was injured and
lost his job. He had to find something else to do, and they both realized there was
no such store in Calhoun. Thus Bridges Discount Store was born. Don also offers
a dvd and cd restoration service. Don’t throw those that won’t play away! Bring
them in, and for $2, Don will restore them for you. He will also buy or trade if you
are interested in unloading some of your old movies or games.
Bridges Discount Home Store is located at 606 Oothcalooga Street, on the corner
of Oothcalooga Street and the 53 spur, in a building owned by the folks who own
the Yellow Jacket Café. Store hours will be M – F from 9 to 6 and Saturdays from

    Flu Shots and Tai-Chi
Some of us wonder if it’s worthwhile to get an annual flu shot. But look at the statistics: Each
year 200,000 people are hospitalized because of the flu!
The rule of thumb is that if you’re 50 or older, have heart or lung conditions, live in a medical
environment such as a nursing home or have any chronic medical condition, ask your
doctor if you should get a shot.
The flu shot isn’t a cure-all, though, and you still need to use caution. Frequent hand wash-
ing is a must. (One thing I like to do is carry antibacterial wipes and scrub down the handles
of grocery carts and the child seat before I put anything in there. Grocery stores often keep
a supply of them at the front door, too, next to the carts.)
Consider signing up at the YMCA for an exercise class. Tai-Chi is a great exercise for us
because it doesn’t involve any joint-rattling bouncing or overextending of limbs. Instead it’s
a relaxing exercise that helps greatly with weight shifting and range of motion, as well as
lowered blood pressure and arthritis symptoms.
Not convinced that Tai-Chi can help you? The results of a small study just released in the
American Journal of Chinese Medicine show how Tai-Chi can increase the level of effec-
tiveness of flu vaccine in seniors. One problem we sometimes have is that we don’t always
develop the full protective-level benefit of the shot. Study participants who participated in
Tai-Chi classes had higher antibody levels than those who didn’t.
Go to www.findaflushot.com, a site where you can find a flu shot in your area. By the
    Haylee Bugs
beginning of flu season the site will be up and running, but for now you can schedule a
reminder to be sent to you by e-mail.

    Children’s Bible in a Nutshell
there were a bunch of major league prophets. One of these was Jonah, who was
In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God,

sure what they were driven in though, because they didn’t have cars.
Jesus also had twelve opossums. The worst one was Judas Asparagus. Judas
was so evil that they named a terrible vegetable after him.
Adam and Eve had a son, Cain, who hated his brother as long as he was Abel.
Pretty soon all of the early people died off, except for Methuselah, who lived to

After Noah came Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jacob was more famous than his

One of Moses’ best helpers was Joshua who was the first Bible guy to use spies.
Joshua fought the battle of Geritol and the fence fell over on the town.
After Joshua came David. He got to be king by killing a giant with a slingshot. He
had a son named Solomon who had about 300 wives and 500 porcupines. My

    SLOW DOWN !

For rhose of you who knew me in the ol radio days, both here in Rome and
in Calhoun., I used to drive like a bat out of hell anywhere I went. Then I got older. much,

much older and began to realize something. I was fast getting nowhere.
Now we are getting global warming from all the emissions, clear cutting our forests at
an alarming rate, melting our icebergs at an alarming rate, which will throw our heavily-
populated beaches into a wasteland of homes deserted by those without the where-with-

But, finally getting to the point, there is no need to worry if we all do one thing.
    SLOW DOWN !

    Good gas tips!
I’ve been in petroleum pipeline business for about 31 years, currently
Working for the Kinder-Morgan Pipeline here in San Jose, CA. We
    Deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period from the pipe line;
One day it’s diesel, the next day it’s jet fuel and gasoline. We have 34
Storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons. Here
Are Some tricks to help you get your money’s worth.
    1. Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature is
Still cool. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks
Buried below ground; and the colder the ground, the denser the gasoline.
When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so if you’re filling up in the
Afternoon or in the evening, what should be a gallon is not exactly a
Gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and temperature
Of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum
Products) are significant. Every truckload that we load is Temperature-
compensated so that the indicated gallonage is actually the
Amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for
    $1532.00
Businesses, but service stations don’t have temperature compensation at
    Their pumps.
    2. If a tanker truck is filling the station’s tank at the time you want
To buy gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is
Being stirred up when gas is being delivered, and you might be
    FINANCING AVAILABLE
Transferring that dirt from the bottom of their tank into your car’s
    Tank.
    3. Fill up when your gas tank is half-full (or half-empty), because the
More gas you have in your tank the less air there is and gasoline
Evaporates rapidly, especially when it’s warm. (gasoline storage tanks
Have an internal floating ‘roof’ membrane to act as a barrier between
The Gas and the atmosphere, thereby minimizing evaporation.
    4. If you look at the trigger you’ll see that it has three delivery
Settings: slow, medium and high. When you’re filling up do not squeeze
The trigger of the nozzle to the high setting. You should be pumping at
The slow setting, thereby minimizing vapors created while you are
Pumping. Hoses at the pump are corrugated; the corrugations act as a
Return path for vapor recovery from gas that already has been metered.
If you are pumping at the high setting, the agitated gasoline contains
More vapor, which is being sucked back into the underground tank so
You’re getting less gas for your money.

Adairsville: Her Times, They Are aChanging
    How to Catch a Pig

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some Exchange

Ok, so maybe Floyd was more infamous than famous. Let’s try again. April 12,
1862, Union spies, Andrews’ Raiders, stole a train, The General, in Kennesaw running
A Definitive Salon & Day Spa
it northward with the purpose of destroying the railroad by burning 17 wooden
bridges. However Andrews hadn’t counted on a spunky little conductor named Fuller
who refused to have his train stolen. Fuller pursued on foot, by handcar, and by
commandeering other trains. So how does Adairsville fit into this tale? Just after the
General passed the Adairsville depot, Fuller met a southbound train, The Texas, and
flagged it down. The Texas backed to the depot, dropped its freight cars and joined
the pursuit….running backwards….all the way to the conclusion of the chase in
Ringgold, Ga. Because of Fuller’s pursuit in the Texas Andrews failed to burn even
    one bridge.
When the new Hwy 41 opened in the late 1940’s, many businesses gravitated away

from the old downtown area. The railroad stopped freight and passenger service to
Adairsville in the early 1970’s and the slow decline of the downtown area continued.
Years later Interstate 75 lured more businesses eastward. Even though Adairsville was
the first town in Georgia to have her entire downtown district on the National Register
    Sarah Cook
    Terrie Taylor
of Historic Places, it was learned in the mid 1990’s that the old depot was scheduled

wonderful renewal project which has touched the whole city. After the depot was
restored the rest of downtown followed suit. Today Public Square is “a Norman
