Spring Cleaning
doesnít have to take up so much time, or at least dominate an entire weekend.
One way to make bigger jobs seem less time consuming is to tackle them piece-
meal. Rather than leaving a big job for an upcoming weekend, you can gradually
get a more time-consuming job, such as cleaning the garage, done by devoting
an hour or so each weeknight. Before you know it the job will be done, and you
will not have wasted a lovely spring Saturday or Sunday to get it done.
Another pitfall for spring cleaning is unpreparedness. Being unprepared is a great
way to waste time. Make sure to have all the tools you will need and check any
power tools to make sure batteries are charged or that you have enough fuel on
hand. Too often spring cleaners will finally be willing to start a job around the
house only to find out they donít have the tools to get the job done. Save time by
taking some inventory of your tools and determining what you need a few days
before youíre slated to start the job.
Embrace Teamwork
While there are some people who love spring cleaning, most people, particularly
children, can think of a million things theyíd rather be doing on a spring weekend.
Parents can make spring cleaning more enjoyable by doing certain jobs with their
kids, as opposed to assigning each person a different task. Kids will have more

would if they were simply going it alone. And parents will have more fun and will
find that jobs get done a lot faster, if they have a helper around.
When it comes to spring cleaning, people tend to fall into one of two camps: those

RUDY CHILDS AND TRADITIONS OF ROME
BY PAUL PUCKETT
In 1981, Rudy Childs moved to Rome from his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. His
interests, through the years, included college sports and high school drama. Since becoming a
Roman, he developed a desire to explore his talents in the retail business field. Having a background
in textiles, he decided to open a store on the 300 block of Broad Street in 1993 that would incorporate
these talents and interests.
The resulting product of his endeavors was a retail store, Traditions of Rome , that features
items for the interior design trade, seasonal and gift items that are for sale during Christmas and
other holidays, and a large variety of sports paraphernalia that have become extremely popular
among college students and their families. At Traditions, you will find the largest collection of college
theme decorator and gifts items in Rome.
Traditions was later relocated to the corner of East First Street and East Second Avenue, opposite
the old Greystone HotelÖnow serving as Greystone Apartments. The current building is quite large
and attractive and every square inch of space on the floor, walls, and shelves is filled with merchandise.
Many manufacturers and artists are representedÖincluding Jim Shore, Demdaco, and Fontanini.
Rudy is not only known for his retail and decorating skills, but he also occasionally directs high
school plays. He just recently finished the production of Bye Bye Birdie at Darlington . Sherri ,
Rudyís wife, has worked within the school system for several years and is associated with the Rome
Council of the Arts. She also starred in the musical presentation, Always, Patsy Cline… the life
story of the famous Country Music starÖstaged at the Rome City Auditorium.

Government Solicits Bids for White House Fence Repairs:
Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House in DC:
One is from Chicago, another is from Virginia and the third, is from Alabama. All
three go with a White House official to examine the fence.
The Virginia contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring,
then works some figures with a pencil. ìWell,î he says, ìI figure the job will run
about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me.î
†
The Alabama contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, ìI
can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for
me.î
The Chicago contractor doesnít measure or figure, but leans over to the White
House official and whispers, ì$2,700.î† The official, incredulous, says, ìYou didnít
even measure like the other guys!† How did you come up with such a high figure?î
The Chicago contractor whispers back, ì$1000 for you, $1000 for me, and we
hire the guy from Alabama to fix the fence.î
†ìDone!î replies the government official.†And that, my friends, is how Government
Contracting works!

ï Go Green Tip: Invest in a light-sensing and/or motion-sensing porch light to save
on energy costs. These types of fixtures turn outdoor lights off when the sun
comes up or come on only when motion is detected in the area of the lamp,
meaning you donít have to leave a light on or remember to turn it off.

you. Share with your physician your intentions to quit. There are medications
and tips your doctor can offer to guide you through the process.
Develop a strategy to cope with the urge to smoke by becoming an expert at
distraction. If your first cigarette is in the morning driving to work with a cup of
coffee, try taking a different route to work and substitute tea for your cup of coffee.
Throughout the day when you feel the need to smoke a cigarette, instead drink a
tall glass of water or take a walk. Better yet, call the Georgia Tobacco QuitLine or
a friend to help you through the struggle.
Anticipate that your stress level may go up and your ability to cope may be limited.
Approach this challenge by planning enjoyable activities such as taking a hot
bath, reading a good book or making plans with friends or family to keep you
busy. However, avoid social cues that may tempt you to fall back into old habits.
For example, keep your distance at least temporarily from people who smoke.
Drinking alcohol may also tempt you to pick up cigarettes and your old habits.
