and banjos were the instruments of choice. Since the average person in these
remote areas was vocally untrained, singing was for the most part rare and
unpolished at best. This form of music was referred to as “old time” or “country”.
From the hills of North Georgia and Tennessee to the Ozark Mountains, these
country folks played tunes they had learned from their ancestors who were from
Scotland, Ireland, England, and other such lands where bagpipes and violins
entertained the locals. This music was primarily played for dancing. Similarly,
when these tunes made their way into the American landscape, they could be
heard in one small town after another at barn dances and town squares. Gradually,
words were added to these old melodies that were lacking in lyrics, while the
ones that already had words were sometimes passed down as incomplete or
inaccurate versions.
Musically inclined individuals, who were able to play their instruments with
sufficient skill, became popular and some were talented enough to attract attention
from “big city folks” who owned the first broadcasting stations and recording
equipment. One might recall the “recording engineer” in the movie “Oh Brother,
Where Art Thou?” who was eager to pay anyone with singing ability ten dollars to
“sing in the can”. The earliest live radio performances and recording sessions in
the field of “Country” or “Hillbilly” music took place in Atlanta, Georgia in 1922
and 1923 respectively. The performers included “Fiddlin’ John Carson” and singer-
guitarist Riley Puckett. Riley was the first guitar-playing, country-music singing
individual ever to sing live on radio and make records. His voice and unique
guitar style has been admired and imitated for the past eighty-five years. The
radio station that featured these performers was Atlanta’s WSB, channel 750

NEW CHINA BUFFET
The Chen family have owned and operated China City Restaurant on Martha
Berry Highway for thirty years.
Mere staying power does not, of course,
guarantee that one will be impressed by the food, service, or anything else.
However, China City has pleased patrons over the years with good food, friendly
service, and reasonable prices. Eight years ago, family members Wendy and
her husband John opened New China Buffet in the Gala Shopping Center on
Shorter Avenue.
Wendy, manager, and John, head chef, are carrying on the “family tradition” by
offering some of the freshest food items and the largest selection of oriental and
seafood dishes in town. The entire array is presented on multiple elegant buffets
in order that you may make your choices with comfort and convenience. You
may always be confident in the quality and freshness, including the items on the
Sushi bar. Wendy makes sure all dishes are monitored and maintained with
those criteria in mind.

and Paul lost track of each other. A chance meeting at the Armuchee Bluegrass
Festival brought the two together again on Labor Day weekend of this year.
Johnny Carson and Phyllis Cole, the co-founders of the ACMHOF, encouraged
Paul to provide them with a bio, photos, and magazine and newspaper articles to
be used in considering his membership in the Hall of Fame. As a result of that
chance meeting, and after a lapse of over twenty-five years, Paul’s name was
finally added to the roster of inductees. The presentation of this award was the
pinnacle moment representing a twenty-year career that included many
performances with top Nashville stars and even and appearance on the Ed
Sullivan Show.
The 26 th annual awards ceremony was held on the evening of November 24 th at
the Hilton Northeast in Atlanta. Several ballrooms were filled with Country,
Bluegrass, Gospel, and Cowboy Music. The event was dedicated to the “American
Cowboy”. The other Hall of Fame recipients were the The Klaudt Indian Family,
Monty Powell, The Marksmen, and gospel singer-songwriter, Dottie Rambo.

    Exercise for Health
    By Sandra Stewart
    Beginner Level
We all know that we need to exercise for health and good looks, but it is hard to
stay on a boring exercise routine. I would like to inform readers about dancing
opportunities in this area that result in pleasurable exercise without boredom.
Ballroom style dancing called “round dancing” is available at clubs in Rome,
    Round Dance Classes
Cartersville, Atlanta, and Chattanooga. There is a “round dance” club called
Rome-A-Rounds located in West Rome. Round dancing consists of ballroom
    Western Promenaders Barn
steps done in a sequential pattern – everybody doing the same steps at the
same time. These steps are previously choreographed so that they fit the
particular piece of music well. The present custom is to have a “cuer” who cues
    327 Woods Road
the dancers ahead of time which steps to do, making it easy to do many different
    dances.
Often men are hesitant to try, feeling intimidated by the word, “dance.” But we
    Rome, Georgia
have found that when a woman drags her husband or friend to a few lessons,
then it is the man who is eager to go. Many men find round dancing easier than
    Beginning Monday, February 4, 2008
their experience with other dancing, because they are saved from the
awkwardness of “What do I do now?”, since the cuer is telling them what to do.
We dance to all kinds of music: pop, rock, Latin, big band, golden oldies, country,
    6:30 p.m.
swing. We dance fox trot, waltz, two step, cha cha, rumba, tango, jitterbug (which
    we call jive), mumbo, polka.
    $4.50 per person
The Rome-A-Rounds is sponsoring a series of beginner’s lessons, to start
Monday, February 4, at the Western Promenaders building at 327 Woods Road
from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you can’t attend this first session, the class will
    Reta Mason Teacher
also be open on February 11 and February 18. The class demands no long-
term commitment. Cost is $4.50 per person per night.
    For more information call:
The instructor and cuer for the class is Rita Mason, an outstanding and patient
teacher, who will show a figure as many times as needed to master it. She is
  • 706-233-4125•
  • assisted by Jim Harris, who is also patient and knowledgeable of the dance
    steps.
  • 706-234-0722•
  • In this class, you don’t just learn steps and then say, “Now what do I do with
them?” First, you can use the skills to dance at your daughter’s wedding, or
  • 706-235-0566•
  • when you go on that cruise. Second, and more frequent, you can dance at
special round dances. In addition to the Rome club, clubs in the Chattanooga
area and theAtlanta area offer special, festive, dress-up occasions several times
a year. Third, and also frequent, you can do round dancing at area square
dances. Square dances (another story) almost always include an equal time of
round dancing. Fourth, the lessons themselves include a lot of just dancing.
There are no alcoholic beverages served at round dancing. It is wholesome,
inexpensive recreation. It is exercise without even realizing you’re exercising.
For more information you may call 706-234-0722 or 706-233-4125.
If your home has a fuse box…
    By: D. TERRY SIMMONS
    State Farm® agent
Chances are, either your home or the home of someone you know, has a fuse box. Fuses
function the same way breakers do—to cut off power if an electrical circuit is overloaded. Both
fuses and breakers can be very effective in protecting your home against an electrical fire.
However, one problem that can arise with fuses occurs when someone inserts a fuse of
higher amperage than the circuit is designed for. If, for example, a homeowner gets tired of
replacing blown fuses and inserts a 30-amp fuse where a 20-amp fuse should go, the 30-amp
fuse allows more current into the circuit than the circuit was designed for. The fuse doesn’t blow
when it should, and the wire can become overheated. A fire can result.
If you have a fuse box, it’s a great idea to have an electrician inspect it for you to be sure a
previous owner didn’t insert the wrong size fuse and to be sure updating isn’t needed. Many
older homes contain aged electrical components, inappropriate modifications, or other potentially
    dangerous hazards.
Regardless of whether you have a fuse box or a breaker box, it is a good idea to ask an
electrician to advise you of any needed electrical system modifications. In our parents’ day, 60-
amp or 100-amp service wasn’t uncommon; but most families today have electrical appliances
that demand more service. It’s smart to get an electrician’s opinion on whether an update is
    Terry Simmons
needed since homes nowadays are typically wired for minimum 200-amp service.
    Your State Farm Agent
Electrical fires are all too common, and too many homes in the U.S. need electrical updates.
Please take whatever action you need to in order to make sure yours isn’t one of them!

    A Christmas Poem
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
The red, white, and blue... An American flag.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Away from my family, my house and my home.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
I can stand at my post through the rain and the
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
    sleet,
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
Who stand at the front against any and all,
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.”
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
”So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.”
The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
“But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,
Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know, Then the
”Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast?
Sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
It seems all too little for all that you’ve done,
For being away from your wife and your son.”
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,

    VETERANS POST
    by Freddy Groves
    Hospitalized Vets Need Holiday Cheer
I can’t think of a sadder place to be during the holidays than a hospital. But the
healthy among us can step up and brighten the day of a hospitalized veteran
    with very little effort.
Call your local VA hospital and ask for the nursing-home care unit or Volunteer
Services. Nursing-home patients will often never leave the hospital and move
back home. A holiday visit and a small present can go a long way toward bright-
ening their day and letting them know they’re remembered.
Here are some gift ideas, subject to approval from staff:
  • Stationery with pre-stamped envelopes and pens
  • Tube socks
  • Watches
  • Bedside travel-type clocks
  • Wallets
  • Photo frames (no glass)
  • Combs
  • Small hand-held games
  • Pocket calendars
  • Colorful bedside containers for small miscellaneous items
  • Canteen Service Coupon Books: These allow the patients to make purchases
  • at the canteens for small items they want. In many locations these are books of
